Naomi’s Village Orphanage
Goal:
2012 was our first trip to Kenya and our mission project for that year was helping at a new orphanage called Naomi’s Village. The orphanage was started by an orthopedist at the Kijabe Hospital and his wife- Julie and Robert Mendonsa. At that time the school had about 25 orphans. The directors were going to be in the US for fund raising. It was Spring Break and we were fortunate to enjoy the children all day for 5 days. We fell in love with them. The thing that stuck with all of us was the love and care that these children received. From director to housekeeper – the kids were loved, nourished and cared for. They learned about a God who cared for them, had a roof over their heads, three good meals a day, an education, clothes to wear and a safe place to call home.
We ran a Vacation Bible School including reading great Bible stores acted out by the kids, reciting memory verses, group singing, making crafts, playing games, and eating lunch together. I was concerned about the language barrier but Boniface (the spiritual leader of the orphanage) was incredible with enthusiastic interpretation. Many of the “Village” staff helped make the activities even more successful. The men built shelves and cabinets in the new nursery while learning how to use the materials available. They worked with the facility maintenance staff and developed wonderful friendships. They also joined the rest of us during some of the VBS time, lunch and the sing along after lunch. One of our favorite experiences was welcoming a new born baby that was found left in a field on the day of her birth. Everyone gathered to meet their new sister; she was named Naomi. We will follow her as I tell about year 2 and 3 at Naomi’s village.
